| "Where it is not possible for the biological mother to breastfeed, the first alternative, if available, should be the use of human breast milk from other sources. Human milk banks should be made available in appropriate situations."

Closing the Gap
In order to maximize our impact on the world, IBMP provides both short and long term solutions. To relieve immediate suffering, we provide direct support in the form of donor breast milk for infants suffering from malnourishment, hunger and life-threatening illnesses in developing countries and to infants in emergency situations, such as our recent shipment to the Philippines after the devastating typhoons and to Haiti after the earthquake in 2010.. On the long term end, we provide funding and support for sustainable solutions that build the capacity of local milk banks and health care systems as a whole. As we work toward our long term vision that all infants in the world will have access to donor milk when mother's own in not available, we hope to close the gap on infant suffering, one ounce at a time.

Our five-pronged strategy includes:
- Raise awareness about opportunities to donate milk around the world.
- Provide immediate direct relief for infants suffering from malnourishment, hunger and life-threatening illnesses in South Africa and to infants in emergent need around the world.
- Fund and support local milk bank development around the world.
- Fund and support health care initiatives and infrastructure.
- Advocate for policies that support and encourage milk banking around the world.
